Word Thieves: Rewrite a Movie Clip

Back in 2019, our writing group had the following assignment: Take a movie scene you are familiar with and write it.

I chose Ride of the Rohirrim from The Lord of the Rings. Disclaimer: this is not my story. I simply took the Movie adaptation of Tolkien's books and wrote it in my style.

The Ride of the Rohirrim

All was lost. The last of the men charged from the gates, horses pushing Orcs off the causeway, swords glinting in the light from the coming dawn. This was their last stand, their last hope. Should they fall, there was no one left to protect the women and children hiding in the cavernous depths of Helm’s Deep.

Arms tired, the defenders swung, lopping off the heads of any Orcs they could reach. Their strength was failing. Hope was promised when the dawn sun rose.

Aragon turned to face the first beams of light breaking over the mountain. There he was. Gandalf the White, the wizard who promised salvation as he deserted them, sat atop his white steed Shadowfax.

“Gandalf,” he whispers to himself, allowing himself at last to hope. The Orcs near him pause in confusion.

“Theodin the King, stands alone.” Gandalf says.

Eomer rides up next to the wizard, the plume of his helm combining with his blond beard. “Not alone,” he says. “Rohirrim!” he yells, thrusting his sword in the air. His army of horselords joins him on the mountaintop.

“To the King!” Eomer shouts, calling his men to the charge.

Gandalf leads the charge down the steep mountain face, the seemingly endless calvary behind. Hooves thundered, drowning out the cries of the incoming force.

The Orcs charge, meeting the new enemy at the base of the mountain, halberds drawn, a wall of death and darkness.

With the final call, the sun rises, bringing hope and light. A glorious light that blinded the waiting Orcs.Halberds went up as the Orcs broke formation to cover their eyes, a saving grace to the horsemen coming to bring them swift destruction.

The forces collided in a clash of death and metal. Swords and axes found their mark. Gandalf’s staff killed all the Orcs it touched.

The remaining defenders rallied, joining in the foray with renewed vigor and hope, blessed hope.
